The Virtual Beit Midrash is pleased to announce the publication of the second volume of Leaves of Faith by Harav Aharon Lichtenstein shlit"a, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion. This book as well as Harav Lichtenstein's previous two books address a wide variety of crucial issues in Jewish life and thought, as detailed below.
Leaves of Faith, vol. 2: The World of Jewish Living
This volume contains sixteen chapters on the practice and implementation of Torah. It covers broad issues such as religion and state, the relation of Halakha to an independent ethic, spiritual response to suffering and the parameters of tolerance, as well as specific issues such as conversion and abortion. The volume concludes with analyses of the place of modernity within Judaism, and suggestions for Orthodoxy's future direction.

The first sefer, LEAVES OF FAITH, vol. 1: THE WORLD OF JEWISH LEARNING, contains eleven articles revolving around the theme of Torah study -- its rationale, methodology, interaction with other areas of life, and application in halakhic decision-making -- and concludes with portraits of two Torah masters greatly admired by the author: Rav Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt"l and Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l.
The second sefer, BY HIS LIGHT: CHARACTER AND VALUES IN THE SERVICE OF GOD, contains twelve chapters on Jewish values and the development of the religious personality. It explores the individual's responsibilities towards his Creator, his community and himself, and the balance between them. This volume originated as a series of speeches and has been adapted for print by Rav Reuven Ziegler, with an emphasis on accessibility to a broad audience.
Rav Lichtenstein addresses all these issues in his inimitable style combining mastery of Torah with erudition in Western thought, and depth of analysis with breadth of vision. We are sure that readers will find these volumes both enlightening and inspiring. The books make wonderful gifts, and are also suited for use in classrooms, youth groups and adult education. Tables of contents appear at the end of this mailing.
We are also pleased to offer a 20% discount on the purchase of these books.
PRICE: The books are available for a limited time at a 20% discount - $23.60 (U.S.D.) for Leaves of Faith (instead of $29.50), and $20 for By His Light (instead of $25).

NEW BOOK RELEASED BY YESHIVAT HAR ETZION
MA'AMAR YEVAMIN
This sefer, in Hebrew, produced by the Kollel Gavoha of Yeshivat Har Etzion, reflects the arduous labor of a year of limud, and is the first sefer by the yeshiva to deal with Massechet Yevamot. Among the 24 articles included, there are two new articles by HaRav Aharon Lichtenstein shlit"a, as well as by his son Rav Mosheh, the Rosh Kollel Gavoha.
The fine talmidim who authored these ma'amarim are supported by the generosity of Rav Chaim Balter, a former talmid of the yeshiva and a personal example of the Yissachar/Zevulun model, together with his wife Chaya. Free of economic worry, these talmidim are able to continue their intensive study, and for that we are truly grateful.
Our thanks as well to the Jotkowitz Family, who have sponsored the printing of this volume, dedicated in memory of their son Mordechai z"l, in whose short life were fused together abundant kindness and piercing truth.

Between Religious Experience and Religious Commitment - Five Addresses on Youth in Crisis, by HaRav Yehuda Amital
In recent years, Religious Zionist youth in Israel have experienced a spiritual upheaval, one that has assumed almost crisis proportions. Exposed to trends in both global culture and Israeli society, they find themselves wavering between extremes: radical individualism vs. community-consciousness; mitzva observance based on commitment and obligation vs. the search for subjective meaning; and religiosity based on knowledge vs. religiosity based on experience. In this booklet, Rav Yehuda Amital, rosh ha-yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, examines these trends and charts a meaningful path towards confronting the educational challenges of our generation.
15 NIS, including shipping in Israel. $5, including shipping overseas. To order, please call Yeshivat Har Etzion 02-993-1456, or email office@etzion.org.il.
